Mute(deactivate/turn off) key frames

Is there away to keep your keys but deactivate them? In Autodesk Maya they have an option to Mute key frames, which keeps the keys on the timeline but deactivates the animation until they are reactivated by the user. If not, is there are a script or plug-in that does this? I imagine it would work by setting the value of the animated attribute to whatever the current values are at the time slider position. This is a useful feature for two reasons, A) If the animation is hindering visibility of the object and needs to be temporarily shut down to make edits to another attribute. B)A client wants some changes and wants to revert one revision to a previous iteration, but there are many changes between the latest file version and the previous one so a lot of work has to be done to the match the one thing to its previous iteration. This would allow you to just turn them off and then turn them back on.
