How to add extra anchor points to achieve a complex rotating effect

Hello all,

I am having a slight problem creating a specific 3D rotation effect.

I am attempting to rotate a sign that is supposed to look like it is hanging on a string off of an imaginary nail (like a closed/open sign in a shop). The sign is supposed to rotate and the string is supposed to "twist" in such a way that it only rotates on the point below where the imaginary nail would be and the strings would cross over each other upon rotation.

I have been able to create the 3D object and am able to do a basic rotation, but never with the desired effect. I have attempted to use the puppet tool to no avail. I feel like adding extra anchor points to the object would help but have been unable to find a way to do so. The comp itself consists of an illustrator file that I am editing under the ray-traced 3D renderer for the purpose of adding depth to it.

Any sort of ideas or points of direction would be much appreciated.

Thank you!
