Can I change the view
Newbie question: can I change the view to make all the AE stuff - the tools, the labels, the icons - bigger? I'm finding them hard to see. I don't want to make the composition bigger.

Pre-Comp Question
How do I prevent an object that is partly outside the composition window in a pre-comp layer not be cropped off? I am animating a pre-comp layer but part of the object starts outside the window. When I move it into the frame the areas that were outside the composition window is cut off.

Using the loopOut() expression always leaves the last frame blank, no matter what I do
The problem:
I've enabled Time Remapping on a composition and am using the loopOut() expression to repeat a 16 second animation until the end of the video.
When I apply the expression, it places a keyframe at the beginning of the clip and at the 16 second mark. When I look at the single frame at the 16 second mark, the composition is not visible. (The object boundaries are visible to scale/move but the image is not.) This also occurs at the 32sec mark, 48sec mark, 64sec mark...
The solution I found (that's not working for me):
- Create a new keyframe one frame before the 16 second mark
- Delete the keyframe at the 16 second mark
What happens instead:
Once I delete the keyframe at the 16 second mark, the keyframe at 15;29 becomes blank. The last keyframe will always be blank, no matter where it was placed, before or after the original.
If I have four keyframes and delete the last one (#4), the third keyframe will become blank. If I then delete the third keyframe, the second keyframe will become blank.
Any troubleshooting help would be appreciated.

Expressions Not Updating?
Currently running After Effects 14.2.0.198 and this is on both Macintosh and Windows.
There will be expressions that do not visually update to what the value says it is.
Example ... layer Opacity without an expression is 0%, layer is not visible.
Add an expression (if/else toggle) for either 100% or 0% ... the expression will be enabled (no syntax errors) and the value colored in 'red' showing it has an expression on it ... of 0% ... but the layer will be 100% visible. Stunner is that if I temporarily turn off the expression the layer disappears because the Opacity without an expression is 0%. Toggle back on the expression-driven value of 0% and the layer is visible again.
Same with position. I have Position expressions placing items in random locations. If I dial in new seed values I can watch the 'red' expression-enabled position value change... but the layer itself doesn't move to the new position.
Edit -> Purge -> All Memory / All Memory & Disk Cache / Image Cache Memory has no effect.
Many times quitting AE and opening it back up refreshes to the correct value.
Any thoughts what's causing this? Expressions are expressions are expressions... they return a value and the value 'should' visually reflect the numbers that correctly update in the 'red' text value field. But don't.

When turning on the 3d layer the render is very slow. Can someone please help?
Hello guys I am using AE CS6 for an animation I'm making for a client. In one part of the video I have a comp with 2 3D layers switched on. Somehow the render on (only) this part takes ages to render. I never had this problem before. If I turn the layer switch off it's all fine but I need to have them as a 3d layer. I've used 3D layers for a long time and never had to wait that long for rendering. Even the ram preview it takes ages. Could someone please help me with this issue?

AE CC 2018 ridiculously slow
Seriously, what is wrong with AE CC 2018!?
I'm on an absolute beast of a workstation, a HP Z840 with 128 GB RAM, dual Titan X:s and so forth, but I can't even preview a simple text animation!
It takes forever to preview, and playback tops out at about 10 fps... I've got nothing in the timeline but animated text, no other graphics, no video, nothing.
And it's not only the preview that's messed up, the entire interface is laggy, when I move the cursor in the timeline sometimes it takes like a second for it to catch up.
Everything I try to do, import a file, keyframe an object, add an effect to something, and so on, takes forever.
I've done restarts, checked nvidia drivers, purged all memory and disk cache, cleaned database an cache, everything you could ever think of, but it's still painfully slow.
I never had these problems in cc 2017, it ran like a dream.
I'm at a point where it is virtually imposible to work, and it's making me a bit frustrated to say the least.
Don't tell me I have to downgrade to be able to work, that would just be, well, silly.
Why on earth would anybody release a version this unstable?

Ingest Assets in AE? Possible?
Hey Everyone,
I find it really useful to automatically ingest all assets in Premiere Pro.
So far, I could not find a similar option for AE.
Is there a way to automatically copy assets in the same folder as the project.

Although I have activated the fonts they still do not appear in my text tool in After Effects. Using version 2018 on an iMac High Sierra.

Solid edge for shape layer
I am not sure why but the shape layer has a single pixel edge that is lighter that I cannot remove. This causes a problem when I am bumping 2 up against each other; I either get a dark line or light line with the overlap or lack of. I need it to look like a solid layer.
I am using expressions to auto size the bottom box based on the length of the movie title. I have tried to extend the bottom shape layer up and use clamp() to set the minimum width of the bottom shape layer to the size of the above text then mask the extra in premiere, but then for some reason it affects the anchor point of my "movie title" text so it no longer stays pegged in the corner.
This is with separate shape layers and a one letter movie title, this is how I need it to be aligned.
and this is with the single shape layer and one letter movie title, needs to be left aligned. Once I get up to 5 or 6 letters it then behaves correctly but not for potential shorter movie titles.

AE Startup/Shutdown Script to Mount/Unmount Volume
I'm hoping to get some help writing a little script to mount an external USB APFS Cache Volume on start and unmount on quit. I sorted through the Terminal Shell Script command, but I get lost with Javascript.
diskutil mount D55333F4-7ABD-45FD-9F78-CD44DB7904F5
By default, the volume does not automount as I don't use AE enough to keep the drive mounted.
Normally I could throw this into an Applescript and call it a day.
Can someone give me some pointers on how to write this or even a good place to start learning? I would really appreciate it.

After Effects Deadline woes - different coloured frames
Hi there,
I'm working on a project at the moment which is rather demanding in terms of complexity and size. We're rendering at around 5.5k, equirectangular and at 60fps. We have a 4 minute long piece which includes a filmed back plate with CG assets composited on top. This all means that we're needing to distribute the rendering and we're using Deadline to do it.
We've followed all the set up procedures and things seem to be working OK with frames being rendered out across multiple machines. However, when reviewing the frames some of them have come out with slightly different brightness. This change in brightness only seems to happen on the CG elements, however. The back plate is a TGA sequence and the CG elements have been pre-rendered out to single EXR sequences with alpha.
All of the machines are running identical versions of After Effects (CC 2018, 15.1.2) and all the same 3rd-party plugins (Magic Bullet Suite and RealSmart Motion Blur predominantly). Talking of 3rd-party plugins, I have also experienced problems with Looks on some machines as well, with it seeming to render frames without Looks applied at all on some frames.
Any ideas what might be causing these colour inconsistencies?

Windows crashes when scrubbing through a composition
I can provide the Windows minidump file if it's of any use. The error is WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR. Unfortunately, I can't provide an After Effects crash report because one isn't ever made as far as I can tell. This has happened about a dozen times in the past 2 months. Just today I've run Prime95 and 3DMark for error checking and stress tests, I've used ffmpeg and HandBrake with no issues, and a whole host of other things to make sure it's specifically After Effects causing it. I've used After Effects for almost a year and it's never been an issue until now, so with that combined with the aforementioned tests I don't suspect it's a hardware issue. I'm not overclocking. Running sfc /scannow finds no errors.

After Effects CC 2019 - Really slow rendering on High Sierra
I am on Mac OS High Sierra and with CC 2018, playback and rendering was really quick. With 2019, it's taking 1 - 2 hours to render a 3 minute video. Something is definitely not right.

AE CC 2018 always crashes on closing
Hi all,
I am using AE CC 2018 v15.1.2 and always experiencing crashes while closing the app on a particular project. Other simpler projects closes just fine.
The other day the problem was unable to allocate 0.005gb memory (I don't really remember).
It crashes after the saving process before the app closes.
My PC Specs:
AMD TR 1950X overclocked to 3.9Ghz
64 GB ram OC'd to 2667Mhz
2 x GTX 1080
nvme ssd for Windows 10 Pro
ssd raid for footage
single ssd for disk cache
