How Do IFlatten 2.5D to a regular flat 1d animation and keeping perspectives?

$

I'm working processing games asset files and as a part of this I have to mimic 3D animations with flat assets; letters spinning in the round for example. I can fake this up pretty good using the faux 3D features of AFX but I cannot take advantage of that for the final export - I'm are limited to scaling, rotating, and transparency of the sprite sheet assets.

How I've been using this technique is to throw layers into depth and then rotate them providing a clear depth cue. I then bake the animation (a script keyframes every single frame) and turn off the 3D switch. This works to a point. (Notice the 'edge assets when seen edge on faking the 3D feel of the letters) What is missing from this is the foreshortening effect that happens in a 3D space as an object rotates. To get around this shortcoming I've been manually scaling the image to squish it in the direction of the rotating. That way I get a little bit of parallax motion and with the squashing and stretching it comes out as a reasonable facsimile of a 3D rotation.

The problem is this is very limited - of course. Works great for a simple wiggle or even full rotation on the X-axis, or the Y-axis, but not both. Both it gets tricky to keep it looking believable. The example here looks fine, but more complexity and it breaks.

Does anyone know of a script or technique that can bake in the visual foreshortening as a scaling factor?

Am I asking too much of After Effects?

WTH? Can't underline text!

Apparently in the world of AE text is never underlined! I can find NO way to format an underline to a word nor can I figure out how to DRAW an underline! The latter is due to my inexperience with AE and to a truly horrific "Help" system that isn't apparently capable of finding the subject "draw a line"!

My client wants to underline a word in some text that I'm animating for her. IS THERE A WAY?!?!

Do please forgive my current rage/anger (which no doubt has colored how I phrased the question)!

Thanks in advance!!

Caps Lock doesn't work when keyboard-navigating timeline

$

In AE CC 2015 v13.5 on OS X 10.11, when caps lock is activated, scrubbing the timeline with the mouse stops frames from being calculated, as expected. However, when I use cmd+arrow keys or cmd+shift+arrow keys to navigate the timeline with caps lock activated, frames are still calculated.

In addition to that, while a frame is being calculated, AE completely ignores all keyboard input until the frame is finished calculating.

This is a huge problem, because keyboard navigation allows me to quickly step forward or backward by a specific number of frames. In CC 2014, even without caps lock activated, I could continue to navigate the timeline without waiting for every single frame to be calculated. This is a slowdown of a very basic function.

Using the mouse for a similarly precise navigation of the timeline requires counting frames manually, and is a huge slowdown as well, even though caps lock seems to do its job when using the mouse. Not to mention the added slowdown of having to constantly switch between keyboard and mouse simply to navigate the timeline.

This wasn't an issue in CC 2014 and I'm considering rolling back to that installation, because this is one of myriad problems that CC 2015 has introduced.

H.264 Making Video Bad Quality

Hello I was trying to make a video, on a game I was playing with 1080p resolution. The video I recorded looked fine, but when I put it into aftereffects, and rendered it it looked horrible. It said it was a 1080p video, but it was definitely not. I changed all setting to super high resolution, and my comp setting to super high to, but it keeps doing the same thing?

Program photos to drum roll beat

Hi everyone,

At the very last moment I have been asked to program photos to very drum roll beats for a projection at a major fashion show. Love that!

Can anyone tell this stressed out maniac (me) how I can easily sync hundreds of photos to about 40secs of snare hits and snare rolls. Its impossible to do this manually for two reasons. One, there is not enough time left. Two, the drum rolls are fast - hence manually trimming clips will not be precise.

I hope I can get AE to program keyframes to the snare rolls, which can then randomly or non-randomly play different photos/layers.

Can anyone help me urgently?

Thanks,

Back to cache a sequence the old way. no realtime during caching

Hi support,

I'm having issues caching my sequences. As long as AE is still rendering frames my playback is never realtime, it will stutter the audio until the complete workarea is cached. This makes me and my clients go nuts, so every time I want to playback a composition, I turn off the audio manually, cache the sequence by playing it, which makes them remark every time, "oh this is a bit slow" and "There is no audio" etc. and I have to explain that its not playing, just caching.

I switched back the old way: Cache first before playback. The realtime playback + caching is just not working..

Also the 'Cache Work Area in Background' is gone.. why?

And Im working on fast mac:

CPU: 2 x 2,4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

RAM: 48 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC

SSD startup disk

FusionIO Cachedisk

My media is on a Facilis fiberstorrage (4K DPX playback realtime)

What happened to the 'Cache Work Area in Background' feature? Im currently running AE 13.7.2.3

But I cant find this feature anywhere. It used to be in the 'Composition' menu and for me a cruciual feature for my client-attended sessions.

About to get the free After Effects 30 trial - basic help making a title screen?

Hello Forum

I'm just a hobbyist user who makes a few video's to publish on Youtube  but I'm looking to increase the professionalism of my video's and it looks like I've found a path to do that but would just like to check a few things first.

I currently use a MacBook Pro with IMovie Maker, I've pretty much exhausted all the special effects, transitions and editing within that programme and then found out about websites where you can download extra video clips, more transitions and overlays to enhance my video's. They also have title clips which is the point of this long winded question.

Great.. I downloaded a lot of these from a site called Video Blocks..... hope it's ok to mention another site here?

However I have got some title clips whereby I need to add my own text into the pre-scripted spaces (" your first text here" - " your second text here" etc) for it to look like a cinematic trailer etc.... but I have been told by that website that these can only be edited using Adobe After Effects.... and this is where I am now.

So... I just found out that Adobe offer a free 30 day trial of their After Effects and am about to sign up for it, will it be a simple affair for me to get to edit these title scenes as I wish?

Sorry if it's a vague question but I am already at the limit of my techy know-how and now this After Effects will be totally new to me, can some one give a basic description of how it would work? ie - Once I've got Adobe After Effects - open it on my MacBook, import my chosen file (title screen thingy) then how would I start editing the pre-scripted text there? -  Do I then need to save it somehow etc?

Ok I've babbled enough I think.

Regards

Jason

Mask/Motion Blur rendering bug

$

Hi, I ran into a very weird problem with exporting from AE CC (2015 13.7.2.3), and thought I'd see if anyone else has had this issue/can discover why its happening! I found a "workaround" that solved the problem for me, but which could potentially cause problems for other people.

I have a series of masks in a composition.  When I render the comp using the Media Encoder, the mask looks correct:

maskedarea.png

Screen Shot 2016-05-13 at 1.58.52 PM.png

But when I try to render as an MOV directly through after effects ("Best Settings", "Lossless") the mask "shifts" for a few frames

Screen Shot 2016-05-13 at 2.00.18 PM.png

After a lot of hair-pulling, I finally discovered that the mask renders correctly when the "Motion Blur" setting is turned to "Off" - here is the setting in its default position.  Note that I have NO motion blurs on any of my layers, anywhere in my comp - so this setting would not solve the issue for someone who needed motion blur turned on:

Anyone else run into this issue, or come up with a different solution?

Cartoon / hand drawn filter possible?

$

Hi motion graphics / illustration experts!

I'm working on a project where I want to create simple cartoon style effect from a piece of footage, and wondered how would be the best way to create something like this (reference): Watch Bleacher Report UK's Vine "10 years ago today, Liverpool were about to lose the FA Cup final until... #Gerrard"

I would hand-draw the sequences, but the only issue I have is my client has over 50 clips they want to create "convert" into short cartoon line drawn style animation shorts.
The footage is a mix of action clips and nothing can be 're-shot' on green screens etc, as there is essentially no budget (obviously).

What would be everyone's advice to approaching a project like this?

Are there any good custom or built in plugins in After Effects that might help me achieve this type of look?

Thanks in advance!

Robbie.

Rendering issue: Light's shadow causing vertical line artifacts

$

So I've got two 3D planes next to each other occupying the same Z space but off set in X so there is no overlapping. I've got a camera & light. By animating the light in Z, I get strange vertical lines that appear over one or both of the red planes. Disabling either plane gets rid of the issue. The light is casting shadow and disabling it fixes it but then I lose out on shadows. I'm using the classic 3d renderer and still get the same issue at 8 bit, 16 or float. Increasing the comp's shadow resolution makes the lines thinner but still apparent.  Any ideas?

For anyone who wants to take a look, a simple scene file is here http://bit.ly/1CMX0xq

Hello adobe world.  I'm boggled.  All I want to do is make vertical text.  I use the vertical text tool and it has been creating text that is horizontal, just rotated 90 degrees, like so:

I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to set the visual directly to the chroma key matte/alpha. The keylight gets rid of the chroma key, but how do I get the background to move with it, without motion tracking?

When I export a AE file to Premiere Pro, it exports it as a black video file. What am I doing wrong?

To give you an idea of what kind of project I'm working on, I made two characters in Photoshop and imported them into After Effects. I did some simple animations of them moving around and whatnot.

I wanted to export it over to Premiere Pro to play around with it. But when I did, it just comes out black. It's a two minute video of nothing. Just black.

What is going on? I feel like I'm exporting it correctly but I can't figure out what is wrong.

thanks

How do I delete an animation from text?

I've applied a 3D Text animation preset to one of my text layers. But I am unsure of how to delete it. There is no option when I right-click, or in the animation drop down on the top menu. I would like to know this just in case I apply animations to various layers and want to delete an animation from one layer and not the other. In that way, undo would not do.

Hyperlapse and frame blending question.

I'm hoping someone can point me to the right resources here.  I've an interest in motion controlled time-lapse over the past 3 years.  Now moving into hyper lapse.  I've started using After Effects at a basic level.  What i now need is a technique to create hyper lapse from a video sequence.  I've seen this done by Rufus Blackwell, who frame blends each 2 seconds of video into single frames which are then incorporated into the time-lapse.  Is there any resource here which could get me started?  Many thanks. Tony.
