Surface Pro 3 pen does not work in after effects

So i have a surface pro 3(i7, 8 gb ram) for about a month now and I just had a project come up where I needed to use after effects. While i could use a mouse and keyboard to get it done, I could not use the pen stylus provided. Anytime i brought the pen sylus down onto the screen it would recognize that click but after that I would not be able to do anything else for about 30 seconds or so. It seems the software would read every pen click as me holding down the mouse button or something. Has anyone else experienced these issues? Any help would be much appreciated as i work much more effectively with a stylus and keyboard than with a mouse and keyboard. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling after effects and also tried installing older versions but to no avail.

Thanks for reading and I hope someone out there has a solution.

Applying Animation Presets to a ps file imported to AE

I did a logo in photoshop. The composition is comprised of 1 image layer, 1 large text layer, and 1 small text layer. Other than the image nothing is rastered.

Can I import to AE and use an animation preset to animate 1 of the text layers?

Alpha Rendering, (NOT)

Made a little video of some flames in front of a green screen, it is a SWF file. Imported it into After Effects. Used the KeyLight effect to add an alpha mask. It looks good on the AF viewer, but doesn't render without a background. Used both AVI and MOV codecs, checked the RGB+Alpha, Set to Million Colors+ and it renders with the background instead of Alpha. Also toggled the little checkered square at the bottom of the composition screen. It all looks good on AF, but does not render without the background, no alpha.

AE keeps importing the same file.

Hello,

I've lately been importing Illustrator files into After Effects for animation. I've been running into an issue where I'll upload one file, and then every file I upload afterwards is that same first file. Sometimes saving the file in a different folder, or drastically changing its name helps.

I've reinstalled AE/restarted my computer. This has been a problem for a few weeks.

Thanks for any help!

Replacing premiere pro clip in after effects

When I do replace with after effects comp (cc2017) with a sequence clip (1920 x 1080 29.97) from premiere cc2017 (original video is 1920 x 1080 59.97), and I fix sequence setting to 1920 x 1080 29.97 in after effects and do fit to comp, the video is correct size in ae but stretches out when I check it in pe. Makes it hard to see how what I'm doing in ae is actually going to look in pe..Thanks for your help!..

Pre Composing lessens quality of footage/assets

Hey there, I've searched high and dry for the answer to this, to no avail.

When I precompose several pieces of footage in a composition or several shapes, their quality becomes slightly pixelated and blurry.

When I open their new comp, the quality is fine, but in the old existing comp, they are not full quality.

Both comps are the same resolution, and this has only started happening recently.

After Effects CC 17 crashes repeatedly on preview

$

All afternoon AE has been crashing on preview at half resolution on a 344MB 4:39 min clip that contains audio. It won't play more than a few seconds then loops and/or crashes.
-I've muted audio in preview panel.
-Followed a video on a potential fix that indicated to raise raise [prefs>memory>RAM reserved for other applications] to 7G. No difference.
-Repeatedly cleared disk cache - no difference.
Actually haven't been able to work all afternoon because of this issue. Must have had near a dozen crashes.
There's not any massive footage in project and comp only has the one 5min clip without effects.

Comp settings: 1080p @ 25fps

Why is the grain filter so slow?

The "Add Grain" filter performs so poorly that I'm wondering if it was written in the 90s and never touched again. On a very short composition with a few other adjustment layers, doing a RAM preview takes about 20 seconds. If I enable the adjustment layer that has the grain filter, each frame takes like 3 or 4 seconds and the whole composition takes about 3 minutes to render. This is on an i7 3930k with 32 GB of RAM which flies on anything else. Looking at the task manager, when it's rendering it doesn't even get to 10% CPU, so I'm guessing it's a very poorly coded filter, unless it's using only the GPU, but when anything uses the GPU I can feel its fan revving up, and it's not the case here. This is with CS6 by the way.

Hi guys,

Got an audio problem wrecking a film. This both in preview and after rendering with Media Encoder. Tried replacing, moving and selectively turning off layers, but no joy. It seems to something underlying. Any clues? Need to publish by 20 June.

Some advice on (shooting for) camera tracking?

Hey people, I've got a request from an ad company to work on a video that would involve putting an animated cartoon bird into some real life footage they are going to shoot (of several locations inside a hotel).
It's been years since I've done any camera tracking and have never used the new built in camera tracker in AE. I've been watching some videos and tutorials on it's use and it looks like it gets good results quite easily from footage, even without any markers.

Do I need to tell the ad company to shoot with markers in their scene or is it unnecesary now? I guess if you had a greenscreen with no perspective info you would still be needing markers, but otherwise?

They sent me this as a reference although I don't think they'll be doing long tracking shots like that:

After Effects - Exporting "Camera Tracking" info back into Premiere???

$

Hi All, I'm working on a scene that has a camera panning very slowly along a wall. In AE I've added a circular graphic to the wall, so it looks like its painted on.
I've "Camera Tracked" the scene so the circular graphic sits on the correct plane. When I play it back, in AE, it looks great. So far so good.
You should know, to get the graphic looking correct, I used the raw, unedited footage of the wall, just as guide. I don't want to import that guide footage back into Premiere, just the circular graphic.

So here's where I'm getting stuck. All I want to do is simply import said tracked circular graphic, on its own (without the raw guide footage) into my Premiere project, so it's sits on top of my edited wall footage.

But, first of all the size is all wrong, i.e. way too big (not how looked in AE) and secondly it just sits stationary, and doesn't move with the camera/wall, as per the tracking?.

I can't get it to work using the dynamic link either. After Effects

Can anyone help?. I am new to this software, so it's obviously something I'm doing wrong/don't understand.

Many thanks in advance.

need help creating workflow: timelapse RAWs to multiple final movies

$

Hi All,

I need a bit of guidance, I hope someone can help. I'm a timelapse photographer who shoots RAW still images and processes them into final movies for stock and social media, and I need a bit of help with the After Effects and Premiere Pro parts of my workflow.

I'm afraid I'm no expert when it comes to AfterEffects and PremierePro, and I need to use both to do what I want to do, which is to create 3 files from my RAW sequences:

1) a lossless full resolution (5K to 8K) high quality video file to use as a base for further processing (e.g. stabilisation or deflickering). This because I understand that using it for a base will be faster than rendering the RAW sequence every time

2) a 4K file for stock sites (with effects applied)

3) a watermarked HD for uploading to Instagram and Vimeo

I'm an experienced timelapse photographer (https://vimeo.com/bothhemispheres), and entirely comfortable with Lightroom and LRTimelapse aka LRT (this is assembly and ramping software for timelapses created from RAW still files), it's just the steps afterwards that I need help with.

Here's what I'm attempting to do now, and the problems I'm having (I'd be very grateful for any insights you more experienced post-production people might be able to offer):

1) edit in LR and LRT, save XMP with raw files (my cameras produce anywhere from 5K to 8K files)

2) open sequence in AfterEffects, create comp from sequence

3) render sequence as quicktime 16-bit 100% quality photo-jpeg  (I'm on a PC, so no ProRes for me).

-a recent 2000 shot 8K TL took just over 3 hours to render

4) re-import that .mov file into AE, create 4K comp and apply effects (usually Flicker Free plugin, and sometimes Warp Stabiliser), render again with 16-bit 100% quality photo-jpeg (this one for stock sites).

-this can take a _really_ long time, depending, I'm guessing, on the effects. But...last night I set a render going and I came back this morning to find that it'd been rendering for 10 hours, with 54 more hours estimated to go (umm... I must've made some horrendous mistake somewhere).

5) create a watermarked HD file in Premiere (I have a good workflow set up for watermarks there). This is where things fall down, and I don't know how to solve them. What I thought was the right thing to do was:

  a) create HD comp in AE using 4K .mov file (resize .mov file to comp size)

  b) Dynamic Link in PP to that HD AE comp

  c) edit that HD comp in PP

Here's the problem: using that linked AE HD comp in PP, it takes minutes to render any frame (no quick scrubbing possible), so I can't practically make any edits (Mostly all I want to do is simple fade in and outs with watermark text, plus fade from and to black, all of my Vimeo clips do this).

I've tried creating really small proxies in AE, but that doesn't really speed things up in PP at all, much to my surprise.

So my problems are twofold:

1) That's a lot of rendering, any tips on streamlining the processes? It'd be nice to set something up so that it could run overnight (vs running one render, and then another built on that file, and then another render for HD).

2) I can't seem to work with any speed in PP with the AE comps as dynamic links (I have a very good PC: fast processor, plenty of RAM, m.2 scratch disk, decent graphics card). I must be doing something wrong, but I can't figure out what.

Many thanks for any insights (which I hope are useful for any future readers of this thread).

Copy & Paste from Premiere to After Effects

$

I've always been able copy a clip from Premiere and paste into a comp in After Effects. Recently though I've lost this ability.

I've also just tried replacing the clip with an After Effects Comp. It makes the comp in AE but fails to place the video clip into the comp.

Not sure if this is an issue with the latest version of CC or just my computer.

Also tried to clear the preferences by holding down CTRL, ALT and SHIFT but without success.

Any ideas folk? All help much appreciated. Thanks

Rotobrush tool is extremely slow

Hello guys, I am currently working on a project and I am rotobrushing cca 60 frames of composition (which is not so much), but the further i rotobrush the footage the more After Effects is slowing down till I came to a point where propagating and painting single frame is nearly impossible because my AE keeps on crashing and if it doesnt crash, it takes forever to paint 1 single stroke. Maybe I was thinking that problem could be in big compression codec of footage which id MPEG 25 frames interlaced ... Maybe conversion of codec would help? What do you guys think?

What After Effects Features Have I Missed Since CS6?

Hello all,

I am interested in purchasing a perpetual license for After Effects CS6. I am curious however as to what all I would be missing in regards to features (as in what updates I will have missed) since that version of the software. If this question can even be realistically answered, I'd greatly appreciate any and all help.

Thanks  in advance,

Hi:

I just got an error that displays and doesn't want to go away even after I click the only OK button in the dialog box.

The error as cryptic as this is, is:

"After Effects error : unbalanced unlock. ( 7 :: 40 )

Does anybody know how to get rid of this and why did it show up in the first place?

Using Mac OSX El Capitan with the latest AECC2015 update (13.6.1.6)

Thanks.
